Joey Lamarre (soon to be Doctor Lamarre) went to the Dominican Republic last week for a seminar on medicine and technology. He was awarded the highest honor for active participation in this workshop.

Joey's mom
Joey Lamarre's mother is one of our housemothers. She spoke to Joey who was in class when the earthquake struck yesterday. His professor and two of Joey's classmates were killed as the walls of the university crashed down. Joey was hurt and was buried for six hours but he was finally freed and brought to a temporary clinic. He may have serious injuries and his mom is going to Port-au-Prince to be with him.

Joey and Toussaint
We are very proud of these two young men of Espwa. Joey is going into his second year at a medical university in Port-au-Prince. He was the second in his class for the year. Have had glowing reports from the university. Toussaint is entering his fourth year (five year program) in a local agronomy university. He is planning to be our agronomist and has started specializing in sustainable agriculture focusing on jatropha. While on vacation they got together and prepared a Tuberculosis Prevention Program which they're presenting to all our house-mothers, staff and older students. They'll also put the show on the road and go to Tiburon and Camp-Perrin. Thanks to Will Perez who helped them polish the presentation. These young men are a terrific example for the younger children.

Joey
Joey Lamarre, pictured here, made the top five in a competition for entrance into the finest private medical school in Port-au-Prince. This was out of 2,593 applicants. Bravo, Joey!! It is no surprise to those who know Joey. What is extraordinary is that he is always available for work details or working with the younger children, has time to write a book of poems and teach the altar servers, sings in the choir... He wrote, directed and starred in a play last spring. He is a great model for the younger boys and girls.
