Before
After
Someone asked in a comment on a previous post how much it might cost to build a home for a Haitian family.  Above is an example of a two room house we built for the Remarais family.  It ran just under $3,500.  Some are more expensive if they are far from the city and others cheaper if they live near the river where we get our sand.  We build one room homes that run about $1,500 - $2,000 but Lord knows how long we'll be able to do this as prices keep inching upward for all construction material.  There's no electrical nor plumbing and the family must own land.

  1. Thank you for this. I will share this with my husband who is 'in' construction. Most interesting. Quite an improvement.

  2. Hello all from Marquette....we are having 3 events fundraising for you all in the next week! Thanks for the rough housing cost estimates...they give folks a reachable target and something to think about....I'll let you know what happens....also, if you have a moment to send a list of stuff that could be gotton to you via Peter or the Habitat Bahamas route, I can start to send boxes of more specific supplies that will actually GET to you!

  3. Is this one of the REACH homes, built by the recent team who was there for about a week?

    It's beautiful!

  4. Nope, this is one of the homes we built in the traditional way-- cement block and metal roof. Most of these homes are funded by Cross International.

  5. Wow! That's amazing! Great to know the approximate cost. Puts things into perspective and gives us all an attainable goal.

Thank you for the photos to go with the explanation. Makes it a reality to the viewer. Great post.

    Thanks

  6. After a recent visit to Fr. Marc’s Blog, I am once again struck by the magnitude and diversity of Pwoje Espwa.
Visiting your blog is like visiting the best of Haiti. I’m looking forward to being there, but in the mean time I’m
connected because of your excellent communication.
You are touching many hearts, including mine.

  7. Within past month saw report on one of the TV network channels about a well known architect in Miami who designed molded homes after Indonesian tsunami. He is now working on a design that can not only withstand hurricanes and water damage, but earthquakes as well as they are not just cement, but an additional compound. They are all one piece, bright colors and ready for plumbing attachments (if available!). Cost was $1000 for I believe three room house. Might be worth looking into. I told Mutty's about this before they left Castine!
Blessings to you all! J. Harris

PS: I will try to find this man's name and how to contact.
