Does anyone know if there are published reports of how much money was raised by the large NGOs in the wake of the devastation that hit Haiti on January 12th? I read that the Red Cross was being criticized for lack of transparency and that people protested at their headquarters in NY. What about CRS, World Vision, CARE...?
I've seen lots of small NGOs doing things here in the south. Not much happening with the big organizations. There's a lot of activity in Port au Prince which is completely understandable but when will the help come for all the displaced down here and their host families?
Received a form to be filled in from the Haitian Government's Office of Planification. They want to know who is doing what. They aren't the only ones.

ReplyDeleteThis is in today's NY Times. Doesn't address your question exactly but does show some of the problem
this was on PBS last night. It might be of some interest to you

ReplyDeleteDecent article out of Miami. Plans seem secretive of course. I always say follow the money and beware of what you'll find.
Don't think anyone is going to fess up unless asked.
Here in Canada the CBC (official TV station) reports still regularly about the need for help and support. Their main link is http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2010/01/13/f-haiti-earthquake.html with many reporter stories etc. Yesterday was a report on the evening news that Canadians privately donated about $100 million (to "registered" aid organizations, I assume those are the big one's) with the government matching this (i.e. another $100 million). In the report it was said that none of this additional money from the government has been released. Now they pledge $100 million to the re-building program that is in the making. I wonder...
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the messages I receive (added together and reading between the lines) show clearly that private initiatives can work, but money donations to the "establishment" won't make much of a difference.
Have a blessed Triduum and don't get discouraged.

ReplyDeleteShouldn't the amount of donations made to NGO's be a matter of public record as it is money from the public? I realise that the reports may not be completely accurate, but it should be able to give us a baseline to work from. I for one will be looking into this.

Just a wild random thought: for a Country without many trees the Haitian Government seems to use an inordinant amount of paper to accomplish very little.

Hi Father Marc,
ReplyDeleteI found this document on the UN web site...it's a 75 page pdf, but it does list lots of major donors and where their money was supposed to go, although I didn't see a total for each category. I usually find good information on the ReliefWeb site (just google relief web). I hope this is helpful.

Hi, this is Gloria from the Red Cross social media team. We keep our Disaster Online Newsroom updated with facts about our fundraising, spending, and planning for Haiti relief. You can follow it here:

The most recent item is a long-term plan we just released that addresses how funds will be spent in the next 3-5 years.
Another link you can keep an eye on is: http://www.redcross.org/haiti.
Hope this helps!
To Gloria of the Red Cross, why is your organization holding back money that has been donated to help the Haitian people right now. Millions of people have donated in order to provide instant relief to the people of Haiti, but your organization seems to follow an ideology that prevents instant payment to these people in need. Your 3-5 year plan is totally unrealistic and is configured to entice outside investors. Shame on the Red Cross. Hello, we can go much further back in history to prove unholy alliances between Church & State.

I read a news item that stated much of the donated money was used to pay down Red Cross debt. That is plain wrong!
ReplyDeleteHello everyone from Marquette. This won't help with the question, but may raise your spirits a little. Marquette has held 4 fundraising events since we returned ...what was that...6 weeks ago or so....not tons of money raised, but some...Just called your brother to see how best to get checks made out to "Pwoje Espwa" into your funding source (in the future, we will try to do the Pay Pal thing, but that is tough sometimes at an event). We also have a couple teams wanting to come...one eye exam specific and one "do everything" group...any thoughts??
ReplyDeletethinking of you this Easter..

I heard/ saw an interview with the head of the Red Cross, the 7 leader in as many years...and they have reported only spent 1/4 of the money raised so far, but plan on spending all of it in Haiti over time.
ReplyDeleteAlso, today all the countries pledged 10 billion, yes, billion to Haiti, being over seen by Clinton and Bush I believe.
Let's hope it comes your way!
