Mother with eight children living in one small room near Les Cayes. She's pregnant and the rent is due. Husband left her with the kids and the bills.
Photos of two of her boys who will moving to ESPWA probably tomorrow. The photo on the bottom is of 8 year old Guerlin, that's his nickname. Real name is Jamesley. He was outside a small restaurant yesterday and crying when Nathalie saw him. He had dropped a plate of chicken bones and had not eaten all day. Nathalie and Dino bought him some food and then drove him home.
the irony is that Guerlin is also the name of a high-end designer (Guerlain).

ReplyDeleteThis picture of the poor woman with eight children and one more on the way has haunted me for the past day. I am a relative new friend to your web site so please forgive me if I am asking questions you have answered before. Is it considered "acceptable" for Haitians to give one or more children away because they can not afford them? Is it common for men to just abandon their families? What would a small one-room apartment such as this rent for in Les Cayes? Finally, is abstenance encouraged after a family has reached a certain size? ( I do not mean to question Catholic teachings....my own grandfather was the eldest of fifteen in a French Catholic family.) This poor family certainly seems to be enduring their share of psychological trauma in addition to being hungry.
